[Natural] Alyxia buxifolia - alec

Post by alec »

Hi everyone, I haven't posted much here on Ausbonsai  But I feel I should definitely start sharing and documenting some of my bonsai experiences. So what better way to start up than entering this 'Natural' competition. After all, natives are my favourites.
Here we have Alyxia buxifolia. It is a local native which grows along the coast line here in Perth. Being a coastal species I'm not sure how well it will take to bonsai culture, however with a common name like 'Sea Box' I recon I should give it a go.
It has tiny white flowers in spring and yellow/red berries during summer.
I propagated this plant from cuttings over a year ago. I aim to keep in an informal upright direction, but you never know what will happen. I feel like this could be an interesting experiment, as I haven't heard of anyone attempting this one yet.

Cheers

Alyxia update for April. This one was a bit of a gamble as I didn't really know anything about this species. But over the past few months its proven to be a little ripper. Its bounced back after a decent chop with nice new growth, back budding and even a few flowers.
After the chop the trunk was wired and bent into shape, I'm aiming for a nice curvy upright shape.
She's looking healthy so I'm happy with the progress so far.

Alec
