[A Forest Tale] Raging Bull, Mixed Natives.

Post by Raging Bull »

Hi MJL,
A couple of days ago I went for a drive up to the Upper Burringbar Rainforest Nursery to find some trees for my comp. entry. BIG problem... too many varieties to choose from. :palm: . I had already decided to set myself a challenge and try to make an arrangement with a variety of species, I mean who's ever gone for a walk in the bush and seen only melaleucas, for example. There are always various species present, so that's going to be my task. To make a mixed setting work.
These are some of the trees I'll be using, though I may add some more before the closing date, or not use all of these. I may even add a native or two that I already have. With the rain we've just had the ground should be soft enough to dig, so another yamadori or two are also on the cards. They will be growing in separate pots for a while until I figure out exactly what I want to do with them.
Cheers, Frank.

Gotta love a challenge... I’ll be watching to see how you marry all these together RB, I think creativity will be key!
I guess the other thing about forests/groups of single species is because they are all the same, they have the same needs for things like water, fert, sun, soil mix etc... you might need to keep that in mind when combining your individuals into a multi-tree setting... just food for thought rather than a reason not to do it... be clever! I’d love to see this really succeed.

Ha! Frank, love it. Here I am thinking mixed varieties might be 2 or 3 in a pot and you’ve gone the whole mixed grill. Does that term date me? Do they even have a ‘mixed grill’ in pubs anymore?

Anyway, I digress. Great that you’re in the forest competition Frank - enjoy the walk.

I would think getting the same size scale is going to be very difficult. Can't wait to see how you handle all the challenges, good luck

Thank you all for the encouragement. Luckily I still have some time to think about it. I'm also adding this one to the list I may include. It's a Euc. deglupta, or Rainbow Gum, one of the few non-Australian eucalypts, but it should fit right in as it looks like a "normal" Australian eucalypt.
Cheers, Frank.

:palm: I couldn't help myself, when I discovered our City Council had its annual tree give-away under way I just had to go. In the past they've more often than not had tube stock, very small, but this year they had mostly older stock. So this is what I picked up..
Leptospermum Burgundy Queen e.JPG
and
2020.01.14 Leptospermum juniperinum e.JPG
so looks like my group planting will be mainly Leptos. of varying types.
Another one I feel could go with the group is a cutting I took from my clerodendron which didn't miss a beat after I cut it and just put it in a pot. That should finally be enough trees to choose from to make a little patch of trees.

“A little patch of trees” ... a slight understatement .

You’ve got plenty to choose from that’s for sure and remember, if it all becomes a little hard to mash ‘em up in one pot ... consider a couple of entries if needed.
