I can relate as a beginner potter. I did a couple of terms with a local pottery club and learned a lot. Unfortunately I don't have the room for a pottery studio with wheel and kiln, so I hand build my pots or use moulds of various improvised kinds.
I just bought various clays and experimented with them, same with the glazes. I became friends with an experienced potter at the class and now have someone who fires my pots for a small fee. If necessary I can also take my pots to the local clay supplier and use their firing service. It's very satisfying to make a pot to match a tree. But beware! As Watto says, it can be addictive. Good luck with your pots.
Cheers, Frank.
