Recently I had a request for some pots that simulated a rock slab.
This is one of them. In deference to our climate it seemed that having some sort of concavity to hold a bit more medium would be wise. So the concept was for a slab that appeared about 45mm thick but in fact that was to disguise the pot within. The idea is that the tree would be planted on a mound well proud of the upper surface and sloping down to the top surface somewhere between the pot shape and the edge. With a tall tree the thickness of the slab will just look like there is some substance to it and offer some balance to a decent trunk. The outside dimensions are 555 x 360 x 45 mm so with a tree around 600 high the slab will look nicely in proportion.

This a step away from regular pot design and demonstrates the flexibility of the medium to meet a challenging commission.

I really like this idea, and the execution is great too. I'm sure whoever commissioned or purchases it will be very happy. And the rest of us will be jealous.

I've had lots of practice.
Another firing last week and here are some pictures of one from that batch - a nice big bowed wall rectangular pot with an interesting glaze finish. Pot is 450 x 350 x 82.

A bit of a departure for me but I tried my hand at a hexagonal cascade/semi pot. About 150 across the flats and the same high.
Nice Chineesy styling touch.

I like the glaze on the simulated rock slab, have you played around with using the same glaze on traditional pot forms? I imagine you might be able to get a distressed/ patina-ed look which might be nice.

No I haven't but not a bad idea The colouring on the slab pots is actually commercial under glaze and application becomes a painting process, infinitely variable but controllable. Perhaps on a pot with a simple profile to make it look like it's carved out a piece of stone.

Been busy making pots to build stock for a sales table at the Brisbane Convention in May. Couldn't manage to get pots to Canberra - perhaps next time.
