Yes I hear you guys. I could see a thick banksia in pot 32. I have one of these from Marie in this texture... It's very natural looking and feeling.

35 is new to me and has such a lovely texture.

Why did that pot ring my bell?
To me it is very much a piece of art. It is free form but at the same time structured and, I think, quite a bit of thought has gone into it. Often the free form pots I see are just thrown together. If it was that easy we'd all be Picasso's. Nothing comes easily and that includes playing with clay. Education is the key!!! Just because you can fire a piece of clay doesn't make you a potter!!!

Hi Pat, thanks for your explanation as to why you think that is a good one,now you have explained I can see all the detail in it,and that is why I asked in what you call garrulous way(had to look up the dictionary on that one) and I am not quite sure whether that is good or bad.

Is pot 12 what you guys call a free form as to me it looks like it is made on a wheel,if so what do you call the one above that looks a bit like one of your cow pats,I am just interested to learn the jargon,that's all.

No, pot 12 is not a free-form pot.
The free-form pots in this thread are:
11, 16, 27, 28, 29, 32

I would assume a definition of free-form pots refers to the actual shape of the pot, not the glaze or texture.
Generally they are not symmetrical, in other words asymmetrical.
I believe Pats brown pots where he folds the edges up and they tend to curl up a bit would be considered free-form pots yes.

Penny Davis is renowned for making natural looking free-form pots as you can see in the picture below. Some of them look like you've taken a chunk of the earth/rock out with the tree inside it:

...My description was very tongue-in-cheek; I was looking for the literal opposite of the literal 'dumb'

Rory has given you an idea of what constitutes 'freeform'. It could also include pots thrown on the wheel and then altered. Thinking about that, oval pots that begin life on the wheel and are then pulled and pushed into a modified shape, ie oval, could also be considered 'freeform'.

So Pat,I am still a little bit confused,No 12 do you consider it is freeform as it started on the wheel and then elongated to make it oval,as it does not look like anything Rory has put on above,please do not use those big words as I had to dust off my dictionary as we learnt different words in the building game,like a rustic effect and make it a tad smaller, I am sure sailors had their own vocabulary as well : lol:

Hey Pat,my apologies,I was getting it wrong,I was talking to my special friend Frances this afternoon about the pots and what you called me and she said and I quote,'You silly old goat,you need to get some glasses" ,as I took it that you were picking No 12 rather than No 32 ,so what you called me is probably right,so you are not the mad potter,rather it is me the mad ex builder that needs bloody glasses,so I have booked in to get some,next week.
I can see what you are talking about now and she is giving you a run for your money.

I have taken delivery of a custom made pot from Marie. The green glaze matches perfectly with the white/green/grey trunk of the flood gum that it was designed for. I will post the tree separately. It was a joy to work with Marie on designing the pot. It is about 300mm diameter and 100mm deep. I have included some pictures of the detail. Marie's eye for detail and finish is on par with a good pieces of Tokoname.
