I am in adelade doing a trainning course for a week .
Yesterday a bought a beautiful sticky wattel tree for a local nusery
I just called the airport to ask if it was ok to bring it In hand luggage to sydney
and the woman said no there is a soil issue ?
What do I do ?
How can there be a soil issue when anyone can just drive from adelade to sydney ?
Can I bring a tree on the flight from adelade to sydney?

I have just put trees in my hand luggage to Sydney without a problem, also to Canberra no problems, as hold luggage.
Remember though it could be up to the quarantine officials.
Also the Myrtle rust problem.
Cheers Pup

Thanks pup .
I'm not sure what to do I want to keep the tree but I may try to return it to the nusery to be on the safe side if they will refund it or part of it:

Hi Paulneill , mate i post bonsai and trainers to S.A , Vic , NSW and QLD through Aussie Post without any issues , weigh has just been changed from 20 kgms to 16 kgms and they are posted with 2 measurement , weight and cubic meters ,maximum size is 600mm x 600mm and nothing longer the 1000mm if than package is a smaller item say 100mm x 150mm , so while it does cost a little more it is quite safe . Size and weight issues and measurements are Victoria as i haven't had the pleasure of sending from other States
Aussie post has to make a dollar somewhere after a huge mutli million dollar loss last year . Myrtle rust is an issue but i have never had a problem sending any live plants . WA , NT and Tas have Quarantine issue and cant be sent to , but can be sent from . Hope that helps .

Re: Can I bring a tree on the flight from adelade to sydney?
Hi
I have taken trees on the plane from sydney to brisbane in my luggage and have never had a problem( apart from getting squashed) last time it was 35 or so packed in a suitecase. I was also told it was a no no due to soil so i take off half or so of the root ball then stick each in a plastic shopping bag and then pack in the suitcase making sure you have the bag packed so the are upright when the bag is carried by the handle. Whats the difference between flying and driving?
Steve

It all depends on the person who you are dealing with. I have brought trees from qld to Melbourne many times with no problem. On one day i had a fellow in qld who said i have to wash the root system off, which i did and then took it on board. I have found that the best way is to turn up and tell them it is a Bonsai and they go "isnt that cute" and off you go. But , as stated earlier, it all depends on who you are dealing with and whether or not they are having a bad hair day. Oh i have also taken from Sydney to Melbourne.
