Callistemon Gets a New Pot

Post by Watto »

This bottlebrush was dug from a local garden in July 2010 and has been trying ever since to find its mojo, but I think it is finally on its way.
In September this year I took this to a workshop with Roger H in Canberra and that set the tone for what occurred this week, which was the re-potting.

I had selected my preferred pot, but I had a second on standby just in case. My preferred pot, the one on the left in the photo was a bit deeper but the internal size was always going to be tight, very tight. The pot on the right was not as deep but had more internal room. Both pots are probably of Chinese extraction but I can't remember where I got them from.

As it turned out I did need the pot with the larger internal size. The pot is a bit unusual as it has the makers "stamp" on the external part of the pot, and I have used that as the front.
I think the new look is an improvement and I look forward to it maturing.

You're going to hate this, but I like the original pot. :palm: What it that one?
Great trunk and surface roots, looking forward to seeing this develop.

Cheers,

Lovely, healthy tree, but the new front (pic 217) makes it look like it has serious reverse taper above the first branch.
May not be such an issue in the flesh?

I think the picture doesn't do justice...looking closer to the photo, the main trunk behind blends in so well with the branch in front that creates an illusion of reverse taper.

Symon, there is no hate. The pot it was in is a great pot, but now that there has been a style change it no longer suits the new look. That pot will go into the shed for future use.
Yes it is an optical illusion in relation to the reverse taper. Some carving that needs to be done in order to give the wildlife somewhere to live (possums, cockatoos, you know) in the old trunk will take care of that issue. As always, its a work in progress but it needs a rest now for a few months.

Nice tree. Like the original view when originally styled, good movement. Was this intended as a front at some point?

Nice progression watto. Looking really good.
A stick in a pot is better than no stick at all. Remember even the best bonsai started as a stick.

Craig - the front is not 100% determined as yet as there is a few years of development to go, that view you like is certainly one possibility though.
Mel I hope you noticed that the beer was unopened.
