Hi Ryceman,
Keep the progression coming. Nice design, I am keen to see where you take these.

Thanks, I think next up will be a root prune just to keep it all under control under the soil ... I'll keep the thread updated, appreciate the comments.delisea wrote:Hi Ryceman,

Re: Allocasuarina Littoralis [Ryceman3]
As promised , I did a repot today on two of the three in this thread... the other one will have to wait as it looks to have dried out a bit and is suffering slightly so thought I might give it a big drink and let it recover before doing anything drastic to the roots on that one.
I have repotted into the same pots after trimming back the root ball probably in excess of 60-70% on both. There seemed to be plenty of finer roots so I think it all should be OK for both of them. I also used a different, more "bonsai" potting mix so I'll be interested to see how this affects growth rates ... next year I think I'll be looking for some actual bonsai pots for these two - I am officially on the hunt! The photos attached give a glimpse of what I did (and are also a reference for me so I remember next time how much I took off this time!)

Re: Allocasuarina Littoralis [Ryceman3]
It's been almost 2 months since the repot and growth has been decent.
While others up North found themselves a bit busy at a bonsai sale yesterday ( ), I kept myself busy doing a bit of trimming and wiring to get this one back into shape.
Results below!

Re: Allocasuarina Littoralis [Ryceman3]
A year or so between updates.
I'm leaning towards turning this one around and having the tree flow the opposite direction, not sure but in any case, that's todays decision! It had a big mop so I gave it a pinch back and a few cuts here and there to open it up and keep it interesting. I think it has thickened up nicely over the last 12 months and I feel like the bark is getting ready to really get gnarly ...
It needs a pot too I think, maybe next season.

Nice progression. You should have loosened your purse strings last weekend, there were plenty of good pots at the convention.

Re: Allocasuarina Littoralis [Ryceman3]
Thanks for the comments Mel and Watto ...
Yeah ... in relation to the pot Watto, I did have a bit of a look, but to be honest I was kinda overwhelmed with choice, a deer in headlights scenario I think. I did pick up a couple of pots for other trees but this one slipped through.
Until the next sales day!!!

I like what you’re doing here R3. Good progress and lots of options for both trees as they move forward. Good stuff.

Re: Allocasuarina Littoralis [Ryceman3]
Had another look at these today ...
Here's how the first one started out : I was less aggressive than I have been on the foliage primarily because I wanted to repot and the motivation to do so had come during the week! I didn't really have a pot that I was happy to put it in until then. I think this one works pretty well. The rock on the left serves no real purpose other than to tell the story about the trunk flow. I think it matches in quite nicely with the pot so for the moment it can stay there. Happy with where it is now - there is room to grow and develop in here, and I think this pot has the right "vibe" for this tree. I like the combo!
I'm a bit miffed I missed the wire cutting in on the trunk - just didn't see it, but in truth it's not that bad and I think will disappear as the bark develops. Needs a bit of wire but I'm going to let it settle in before I reset the branching how I want it to sit.
All in all -it's moving forward!

Re: Allocasuarina Littoralis [Ryceman3]
Gee I like this Ryan. Just beautiful. A little Boom-like. I think the rock does add to the the story... lots. The wire scar will be irrelevant in no time. As I look at the photo- I’m wondering what a slight title toward the viewer might do ....so that bottom right hand branch slightly obscures the trunk line .... so you can still see trunk through the foliage but a touch of mystery is added. Mate - in truth -I’ve got no idea if it would add or detract ... just an idea as I looked at the photo. Indeed, the same affect would be added by viewing from above right,I guess. Cheers for the update.

Re: Allocasuarina Littoralis [Ryceman3]
Hey MJL, thanks for the feedback - I'm not sure how Boom feels about it!
You're right on the point you make above I think. My strategy is to wire those branches out once it recovers from the repot and part of the plan I have in mind involves doing something like what you're describing with the lower right branch ... we'll see how it goes in a month or two!

Beautiful tree there Ryce, really nice movement in the trunks and branches. Looking forward to seeing even more progress on it.
