Citrus australasica ǀǀ Finger Lime

Post by Steven »

The Finger Lime plant, Citrus australasica (syn. Microcitrus australasica) is a thorny understorey shrub or small tree of lowland subtropical rainforest and dry rainforest in the coastal border region of Queensland and New South Wales.

The plant grows from 2 to 7 meters in height. Leaves are small, 1-6 cm long and 3-25 mm wide, glabrous, with a notched tip and crenate towards the apex. Flowers are white with petals 6-9 mm long. The fruit is cylindrical, 4-8 cm long, sometimes slightly curved, coming in different colours, including pink and green.

I hadn't ever seen a respectable bonsai Finger Lime until the other night when a member of the School of Bonsai, Ray, showed me his. Apologies for the phone pictures!

I hope you like it as much as I did. Can't wait to get myself one now :tu:

EXCELLENT - This is what I have been waiting to see. Love it. I have grown these but being a subtropical species and me living in the hot tropics - our summer wreaks havoc with them. Good to see they are well and truly worth it! A credit to the grower.

regards
Ash

I have a bunch of fingerlime seedlings growing in Perth.
They have been very slow to get going but seem quite hardy.
Any advice on how to bonsai them? They send out long spindly arms pretty quickly once they get going.

Also happy to give a few to anyone around here that wants one - or cuttings from my big grafted ones.

Hi Steven, Ray's finger lime is stunning, did he share any tips for care or development? Any do's or don'ts with them?
Thanks in advance

Sorry Jack, no specific advice and I haven't seen Ray for many years. Have you checked the PDF attached to the original post?

Hi Steven,
Sorry for the slow response, I finally got round to reading the pdf only to remember reading it when I first struck a cutting in 2011, it has been a bit like this reply, slow in happening hence my hope for some inside tips. What I have found, that differs from the pdf, is that it likes plenty of fertiliser otherwise it just sits & marks time, not looking sickly but also not growing. I think sentiment is the main reason I persist, perhaps with another decade or 3 :crikey:
Thanks
JJ
