You would have stood a better chance leaving it in the ground, and Buying a nursery stock tree. More chance of survival and getting a Bonsai from it in the time frame you have in mind.

Thanks Harry the problem has been getting one around here no one seems to carry true paper bark mels (quin or other) local council guys are doing a big order of natives from Queensland next month and have promised to order me to stocks plus ive ordered seeds now that is a much longer process but in the long run I may be able to give it more of a run its true age would be the right year then if grown from seed. and am also thinking about trying to grow the some of the seeds with other natives in a forest setting would planting them straight into a group pot and having seeds have any benefit i know generally that it will make the process longer then in ground or growing pots but im only young ish so i have time.

If you want to build a forest from seed, you will need to germinate the seeds in a seed tray and then grow each tree on in a separate pot and usually each tree is shaped to fit its final location in mind.

Then you can plant out the forest into your tray.
From seed, depending on varieties, you wou be looking at 3 - 5 years of growing seedling before you p[ut them together in the setting.

it is NOT a matter of just chucking a heap of seed together in a pot and hoping for the best.

Re the collections of your tree. The single most important this to remember, is to take the largest root mass you can. It is no good to dig a tree with no roots and expect them to grow.

Some species can be collected without any roots. Most require to root ball to be intact and relatively undisturbed in the process of collecting.

That means you dig a large channel around the tree and under cut it to ever any roots. then lift the entire tree and its root ball out from the ground and then pot up.
Most times over the next 2 years th recovery will take p[lace and unless you bare rooted during collection, then you will replace the native soil with good potting mix.
Collecting a Tree does not make instant Bonsai. Usually about 1 -2 years to establish the tree before any work can be done to it.

Hey Rintar,

If your having trouble tracking down nursery stock I know a few places here in newcastle as well as a wholesaler who always has heaps of Mel's in, last time i was there they had a heap of old potbound Melaleuca quinquinerva that would be great for a forest or grown out individually.

6 weeks on and it lives. I ended up cutting it right back just leaving 2 branches spindly at best but none the less it lives no back budding as yet. A week(ish) after my last post on this thread was when I purchased a nursery paper bark and a claret top as well both got server pruning of the roots and foliage to drop them back to a bonsai ish height the purchased paper bark resides now in death. The claret top has a whole heap of new buds that have just sprung forth like little welts of blood. I have photos but I cant get my computer to recognise the camera to be able to upload grrr. Will try later.

Good to hear the collected tree is still alive. Don't be surprised if it doesnt shoot for another couple of months, as long as the top is alive its putting down roots

Not surprised the Claret Tops is kicking hard, I think they are the best native for a beginner, tolerating all the usual, dont care when the works done or what you feed them. Sorry the other died, does that mean a trip up the hill soon?

Very possibly matt got to go to MILs tomorrow do some more work In her gardens. And go down the street to do a few things. Want to bring home that small.leaf benji of hers( well mine now) try nurse it to good health. In hope of a good recovery I have named it marshal. I thought it was a tiger didn't realise it was benji. ( NRL reference). If you get bored tomorrow give me a call. Could.do with.a.hand in transport and I still need to get components for a good bonsai mix, shout you a coffee and check out your trees and other collections of growing things

tried that harry the transplant still lives while the after bought nursery is now dead...
either was a gamble
