Without dragging Jesus into it, I thought the low-out-to-the-side shape you had originally had a bit more coherent flow to it. The base is so thin, but if the trunk goes sideways, you don't notice.

It's a stunning thing, whichever way it goes.

Wow! This thread is like a movie I love with an ending I didn’t expect. I am with Ryceman3, Theodore... the old back being the front and Treeman on a different pot but... beauty is in the eye of the beholder ... it’s your tree to do what you want and creative you will be!! It stands like a challenge to nature and to any preconceptions about what a Bonsai should be. Bold indeed.!

For me, I’m looking forward to the movie sequel ... where the back returns to the front... the star returns, triumphant from a tortuous detour [SMIRKING FACE][SMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH AND TIGHTLY-CLOSED EYES]

I have returned to this thread this morning, last night I was looking at it on my phone after lamenting my team's loss at the 'G.

John, I reckon this is quite brilliant. I can now see, from the time that you have collected it, how it has been nurtured, particularly that fragile trunk in the early years. The photos are so much clearer on the bigger laptop :palm:. I still think the original style had a more natural logical flow :imo: ... but that's just boring me! This upright style will create more debate and discussion and perhaps that's part of the objective of art; isn't bonsai 'the patient art'. Anyway ... well done collecting and curating this piece over the years. Excellent stuff and I'm inspired to push harder. I've much to learn and threads like this help me understand the possibilities. Cheers, Mark

Hi All,
Once again thanks for the feedback.
Mark really enjoyed your first comments ,thanks for the laughs. :) . I was really pleased with the first incarnation of this tree .However in the real the first bend kicked out the tree a fair bit , although pretty hard to see in a photo. Having the luxury of some nice collected material to work with allowed me the option to really go for it with this tree. I will keep the updates coming.
Regards John.

Hey John,

Whatever else - you've created a thread that has garnered some of the most interesting replies ... AnthonyW made me laugh and scratch my head all at the same time. :D :lost:

And here I was concerned about my post re: Reo Speedwagon and Powderfinger in the Bonsai cafe last night... but bonsai that repels Witches .... blimey!

Cheers

Mark

A quick update to show the flower show. I usually don't let my Kunzeas flower as it seems to take a long time to get moving again. However slackness took over this year ,still no serious work done yet . Hope you enjoy . Cheers John.

WOW!!!!! :o I was more impressed with the original raft style tree and thought "now he's gone & spoiled it" by putting it upright. But in flower and filled out like this it really looks amazing. :tu:
Cheers, Frank.

This remains one of my favourite threads. One that has inspired quotes everywhere ... none the least being KC&R exclaiming: "Sweet baby Jesus" some time back.

John - what you have done by turning your raft on it's head has certainly set this thread on on it's head. It's like that scene in The Greatest Showman when the circus comes to town ... some are interested and happy; others want to set the tent alight!

And while we are at it, let's enjoy a bit of the movie; an ode to John's tree https://youtu.be/CjxugyZCfuw?t=115

Or hell just watch the trailer .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8AXrVhuVwY

And in all the joy I am getting out of the tree, the design , the comments .... I also go back to Ryan's inspirational photo; a photo which I love too.
