That's just what I'm used to doing. As I said, other school of thought is to leave lots on to get roots growing. Just shows there is always more than one way to grow a plant.

Please keep us updated as these progress. Your experience (good or bad) will give the rest of us valuable data.

Located in Aldinga, I'm going down there this Saturday if your interested in giving us a hand.
The owner is soaking them to make it easier, the root balls are shallow...

Cut back to 15cms off the ground, and go back and get the rest after you've had a couple of beers. Then plant them back in your grow beds, grow them long, cut back, and develop a complex trunk. They are a great start, not a great bonsai yet. But they get you three or four years ahead compared to anything you'll find in a pot.

WAY TO GO!

Thanks for that info, I'm going to keep a few and probably sell the rest, think they'll fetch a little money as a starter??
I've already lost quite a few layers of skin!!! :(
Got to get something back for pain and suffering!!!!!

I plan on leaving them in those large pots to grow in..

Collect them all if you can and then pot up, Chop back and keep well watered.
Once they show signs of good recovery ( 6 months or so) Sell off the ones you do not need.

That is what I am doing with this lot I collected. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=18634&hilit=+callistimon
I have sold about 1/2 now and will take a few to the Ausbonsai Sale day next year.

Little update....

So far 4 out of the 8 are showing signs of life with buds showing. :tu:

So now my question is, 6 have been chopped down to 15cms with 2 left full size, should i hack those 2 now, or wait till they also show signs of life, one still has some green ish leaves.

I lost quite a few, some were due to my own fault.
I had 5 surviving until I burnt a few with too much fertiliser...
So I have 3 going along well, so far I'm just letting the grow and planning on keeping only 1, which happens to be the curved trunk one....
