I've been looking for a potential wattle since I decided to start bonsai a few months ago and I can't believe they are so hard to find.
I have seen plenty that are cascades grafted onto a tall straight trunk, but they were nearly as tall as me so they were out of the question.
I can understand that people don't generally buy "trees" as often as other plants, but I thought a plant that if the basis of our national colours would be more readily available!
Today I finally found one. It's not as small as I would like but you can't get everything you want, right?
I must have looked like a moron trying to pick one out. Standing there in the Bunnings nursery with 3 or 4 of them lined up in front of me, debating internally, until I just gave up and grabbed one before I drove myself mad.
Here's the winner. But I don't know very much about acacias yet so I'll take any advice you can give. Pruning especially.
I'd love to have a shorter trunk, and I think it would be really nice as a cascade. What other styles do you think would suit?

If you're after a shorter trunk I would wait a month and let the tree settle into it's new environment and then cut back to the first branch. A way to go yet with that one, patience is key.

Re: Acacia fimbriata. Advice?
Hi C8lyn
I have tried a few wattlyls with mixed success and below is one of my posts from a few years ago about them.
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=8682&p=112429&hili ... da#p112429
See Rogers' reply
and then this post on a fimbriata I had
viewtopic.php?f=49&t=8683&p=112342&hili ... da#p112342
I tried 3 initially and and had 2 of each type and only now have 2 surviving.
I have found that any branch that is wired below the horizontal is most likely to die, but not guaranteed.
Back budding is not reliable on them, and not at all on old wood from what I have found.
Do a forum search for acacia and you will find quite a few different ones being tried with varying sucess.
