Great prize, can you enter more than more than one tree?

Can someone confirm if Baeckea Virgarta or Sanantha Semilis/Virgarta is a qualifying native for this comp.
Thanks.

Hi Alan

Thanks for your question. I have spoken to Roger Hnatiuk about the Sannantha species.
Here is his response:

Hi Leigh

Sannantha virgata is the accepted name of the species that has been referred to by a number of names in the past. It is a complex species, so it has taken some time to sort out what is going on. There are other species in Sannantha/Baekea, but it is likely that someone using the name S virgata has the plant by that name.

Earlier names that are no longer valid for the Australian species are Baeckea virgata and Babingtonia virgata. There are others, but these are the two that have been used in horticulture/bonsai in the past.

Hope that helps.

Cheers
Roger

Based on this response, we will accept Sannantha virgata.

Cheers
Leigh

Ok thanks for that but I'm non the wiser after the explanation. Your saying that Babingtonia Virgata and Baeckea Virgata are not Valid but Sannantha Virgata is.?
But they are all Baeckea's. Next one to ponder is which one I have and who will confirm which it is.?
Simple answer needed please, is a Baeckea a native or not. ? Looking at on line images Sanantha and Beackea Virgata are the deemed the same.

I believe that Roger is saying that Baekea is just an out of date name for the species. Your plant is almost certainly a native and should qualify as an entrant. The species is currently known as Samantha virgata rather than Baekea virgata but still the same species.

Entrants should consider how they will feel once their tree gets changed after the collection acquires it. The centenery juniper that was bought a few years ago now looks different to what was purchased.

That's the downside of the cash - your baby ends up looking different because whoever holds the scissors has a different idea of what a good bonsai looks like to you. If you are going to be upset, keep your treasure on your bench.

I always see myself as merely a custodian of my trees . Yes i've grown some , styled many and tried to keep them in a healthy state but when a tree moves on i'm no longer the carer . If the new owner decides to restyle it etc to there liking that's totally up to them as they are now the custodians. Many of my trees have been through several carers over time.
