Haven't used them as bonsai but had a garden specimen that was maintained with the hedge trimmer. It seemed to cope well with regular trimming.
Usually a smallish shrub so don't expect a hulking great trunk.
Not too sure about root pruning. I guess if you trim roots early to get a fine root system it may be OK.
Previously called Eriostemon in case anyone thinks it looks familiar but doesn't recognise the name.

Thanks Neil. I've never seen them til today, a Melbourne friend showed me what she was planting in her garden. The flowers would make a pretty display on a potted tree.
