No these are all natural. Banksia serrata get quite a thickened trunk pretty quickly. I chose these as the had naturally fallen over aswell. Great species for bonsai but not my fav. If you notice oneof the latest photos is slightly different. That's a banksia integrifolia which I prefer as I have found it more vigorous. It doesn't thicken as easily though.
Good stuff squiz. I think of those pics you uploaded today, the first one has awesome potential. The others are all great material too, but me likes the first.

I'm loving the way the bark is cracking on that integrifolia. I prefer them to serratas too, the serrata trunks reminds me of an elephant that has spent too long in the bath

Yeah the possibilities are endless with that one Rory. It's just a trunk and a few branches. The photos don't do any of them justice. They all have great trunks I think.

haha, thats funny. I know what you mean. From the serratas I've seen over my time, if they are kept too short over long periods, they seem to develop that blob look to them. Promoting a strong leader seems to help in creating more of a balanced trunk, but I have not seen many that look good being kept really short in my opinion.
