I've found multi trunks to be difficult to control at start-up , so this could be the go for me

I like the idea of this. I started a PJ fig in feb and I'm going to try a few with Tridents in the coming months. I used paper crete to make the part the trees will slip through. I taped some irrigation hose to a board, sprayed it with cooking oil, poured on the paper crete then pulled out the hose when it was dry. Where the papercrete hasd been on the board it makes a nice flat surface. I probably should have taken photos...

At the School of Bonsai, we hget all of the students to create at least one of these. We refer to them as a "Holy Ron"
Ray usually supplies many Trident starters adn we always just use a tile with holes drilled in it.
Alternatively any drillable flat surface will suffice.
