Chinese Elm - First Carving Attempt

Post by Theodore »

Bonsai Enthusiasts

Took to a Chinese Elm today with my new dremel.

Any suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated! Note this is my first attempt at this.

Be as honest as you can! Don't learn anything without it.

Not going to lime sulphur it until I hear back!

I like it!

I think the bottom of the right hand trunk needs a little more texture to match the rest of it.

I don't trust Bonsai, they are a little shady.

Hi Theo,
When doing carving, make sure there are no pockets where water can gather. This could end up being a source were rot can start. You can usually create a channel or drill a hole in and area that can't be seen to allow the water to drain away.

Thanks Ray. I'll pour some water on it and make sure it gets away!

Looks good. I did my first carving last week too. I think yours looks better than my attempt.

I didnt think lime sulphur was for deciduous trees.. i thought it was for pines and junipers because they turn white naturally. I was going to search on here for some info on what hardener to use on the deadwood.

Earls Wood Hardener, It's in the paint section of your local big green shed.
