Super work, amazing what can be done in one season if you get stuck in to improving already very good stock. And how about that (what I'm guessing is a) chojubai clump its sitting next to, awesome.

The updates to this tree and success of the root grafts in particular look fantastic!
I am very impressed with the results thus far and look forward to continued updates on this tree.

P.S. IMO You have been "winning" Ausbonsai of late! Keep it up!

Thanks Boics but there's no competition and nothing to ''win''. I like talking bonsai and I don't get out much so this forum gives me (and others no doubt) a chance to exchange ideas and techniques and show their work without leaving home. I thought it would be a good idea to post an extended work to give members an idea of some day to day and year to year goings on in the life of tree.
As you know, this kind of thing is next to impossible at a club demo.
Happy to keep posting updates on this particular maple. It is interesting to me to look back 12 months as well.
I will post a pic of it in spring. That is when it really looks it's best.
Yep that's a choju. Just started flowering in the last week or so.

Please do. I will definitely like to see this every year both Spring and winter silhouttes.

Any though to tilting left a little to bring the apex over to the base more?
For me a slight tilt on the main trunk to the left would improve the trunkline.

Just to clarify my statement about "winning" Ausbonsai was "tongue in cheek"...

It's been a bit of an internet fad of late to say you have won / broken / the internet etc etc so - my jest may have gone over some people's heads?

Point is I wish to encourage / acknowledge Treeman because of late I've see some great threads/value added to this site.
I agree that the stated reasons for contribution are exactly why I believe we should continue to make the effort for this fantastic forum.

So now we have that aside let's look forward to further updates on this great tree/thread combination!

I know! I intended to do that and only noticed it after watering and thought ''NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO You bas......d!!''

I love seeing these types of posts where we get to see subtle improvements of tree's over time. Thanks for sharing Mike, this is another cracking tree that has a great future. When those new roots fatten up the base will be amazing and you will need to find an equally special pot. Maybe a pale blue or cream shallow one?

The grafted back branch is established and growing. The donor branch was finally cut off just before repotting this spring.
It has a long way to go but I think the direction is pretty good now.
The beautiful new leaves of this variety...
