Hello friends,

Hope everyone kept well through the winter! The ficus I bought survived the winter and there has been new growth and it's quite impressive! I was wondering whether you think it's warm enough now to go and cut the tree. I've attached some photos about where people think I should cut....if I do cut it at the stump where would new shoots come from, (I have become well versed also in the wiki page about how to cut the bonsai trunks)
Trunk chopping:
viewtopic.php?t=8312

Do you think I should do a straight across cut (line 2, 3 or 4 in picutre) and wait for buds to grow and then a leading branch? Or try and angle the cut so that it leads into one of the branches (line 3)?

The previous photos show a side on picture - not sure whether to cut above or below the bend! I want more growth than just two rabbit ears!

What is everyone's thoughts?

Greatly appreciative!

Cheers

Howdy Ron
Glad your tree survived the winter, if it was my tree I would cut at No2. Like ken said the bend gives a bit of character, and you have enough trunk for shoots to develop and then you can choose your direction and cut back to that shoot. :2c:

Read Steven's thread on fig development.

Someone will let you know where it is located.

Cheers,

Did this fig lose all it leaves in winter/early spring just before new leaves grew?

Looks like a White Fig to me :2c: Should be bulletproof. Cut it wherever you want, it will bud back. I would get rid of that bulge - cut below it. Feed it lots of chook poo and water profusely.
