melbrackstone wrote:We get growth on figs year round here in Brisbane too, so I can imagine that things would hardly stop at all in Mackay! But yes, I think air circulation will be important for your trees, and I'd possibly only use the outside bowl for the very coolest days, summer will likely cook your plants, even with a little extra space under the colander. That's just me guessing though... happy to be proved wrong. :D
Thanks for advice. I'll post some pics when I have my cuttings ready

Hi Kirstie,
I wouldn't put the colanders in the pots. If you need more humidity just place the colanders on the garden. You will get a lot of humidity from the soil. You don't have to ground plant them if you don't want to, just putting them on the garden will make quite a lot of difference.

I am unable to ground plant, but have had some really good growth by placing a mesh pot (equivalent of a colander) inside a larger pot, on a plastic water tray.

Because the mesh pot is shorter than the outer pot, it never sits directly in the water.
My water loving plants such as melaleuca seem to do really well with this arrangement.
Here is a water gum today:

With your outer bowls, I definitely would drill holes so they drain well, but it might be worth a try using them outside the colanders, especially if you can't put them on the ground as Ray suggests.

Agree with Ray, I've had some excellent growth with the plants sitting on top of the soil.

Redsonic, that's impressive growth there!

Hi banong,
Good find. They look quite strong with the ribs going down the sides.

I found these at the local "hot dollar" store
It was the last place I looked

I repot a few Golden Zelkovas yesterday, ill try and get the photos up tonight as I did need some clarification as to whether or not it was best to slip pot or actually prune the roots for better nebari

ahh, we don't have that store here, I'll need to look further!

As I understand, it's always best to root prune before colandering. :)

Grabbed a bunch of these last time I was in IKEA... They are actually 2.95.. think this price is USD.. feel much sturdier than my last batch of dollar store ones, albeit a little deep. They keep thousands in stock too so can grab as many as you wantImage
