All the bonsai nurseries in Sydney stock it
Inner tube rubber works but you need to cut into strips, that's a bit 'tyresome.
I got away with electrical or similar tape in emergencies and it worked OK. Just
wired over the tape and the branch healed' Now I buy online from any bonsai supplier
and get it mailed out, light weight so cheap to send.
cheers

Jute twine is an organic substitute.
I get mine from Flower power nurseries
VET tape is OK as well as it has no glue

Yes it's a lot. I got one lot nearly 18months ago. However having the extra is great for heavy bending. I don't mind sharing either.

Has anyone ever used plumbers tread tape as a raffia alternative?

I don't think plumbers tape has enough elastic/ constrictive quality to do the job.
When I bind a tree before bending I need the binding to hold all the fibres tightly in place so they do not break. I need something strong and preferably something that will shrink a little after I place it so the binding is even tighter when I do the bend.

I use this stuff....

https://www.bunnings.com.au/whites-40m- ... e_p3320961

It's very strong and can be pulled very tight. It's rolled over on the sides so you have spread - wrap - pull but once you get the hang of it, it works very well.
When spread out it's about 30mm wide.

I decided to drop into spotlight on the way home and pick some up as been thinking about putting some big bends on a small juniper.
But it only came in small bundles, now I probably don’t need lot right now but it was only $5 so thought I would get three
Image
As I was paying asked the lady at the counter if they had bigger bundles ? They didn’t but she told me to go to a place down the road
Image
This is where she sent me, massive shop, anyway for the price that I paid for the little bundles at spotlight I got this bundle.....Image
I don’t think I will ever need raffia again
