Here's a link to my original article. Unfortunately the photos were lost during a site transfer :palm: but the text is still good. http://shibuibonsai.com.au/?p=188
I've found a couple of photos of the results after one year though
Here's the foil wrapped rock in the pot it has grown in for 12 months
P1150459.JPG
After un potting you can see that the roots have grown out the bottom of the foil wrap.
P1150460.JPG
Note that no roots have escaped laterally which is a common problem when trying to grow root over rock tridents using other methods.

After unwrapping you can see that the roots on the rock have been kept right up close to the surface of the rock. You can also see that there are lots of new roots that have developed during the growing season.

And a closeup look at the main roots.

I will try to get replacement photos into that article on the website

Maybe something like this?
A small shohin tree on the rock ( assuming the rock is not that big) :-)

Neil can you please confirm if you place a thin layer of soil between the rock and roots when wrapping in foil?

I have used the technique from Neil on 2 trees now and 1 had muck around the roots and foil over that and 1 just with foil over the roots.
The one with just foil has developed better of the 2 so I do not think it in necessary to have soil under there as well.

I do not use anything under the foil. Just place the roots on the rock and wrap in foil. You might need a few extra hands to hold the rock, keep the roots where you want them and wrap the foil around
Past experience using clay or muck saw roots rotting instead of growing. Roots grow very well in the damp space between the foil and the rock. The roots must have moisture so make sure the top is open so water can run down into the space between the foil and the rock. Also needs to be open at the bottom so that roots can grow out the bottom and into the soil or potting mix.

Thanks Shibui,

Re the extra hands, I've had success with rubber bands to hold the roots in place. I'll post a thread to show you some photos in the coming days if you like.

Cheers,
Pearcy.
