Hi Folks,
I have been doing some heavy bending at home and found it difficult on my own. Sometimes the bends take quite a lot of effort to achieve the bends so I decided to make myself a Bending Jack.
The jack is about 24inch long. The jaws are reversible for pulling and pushing. The jack screw is 1/2inch whitworth thread. This size helps the screw from bending if the jack is used in the pushing motion.

It makes it easy to do the bends. The bending action is slow because of the screw. It is very gentle and you can give the tree a rest every now and then during the bend.

Impressive work Ray, looks like it would work a treat. Have you made multiple different radius hooks so they can be changed to best for each branch or is that not required in your experience?

No, I haven't at this point. I will try it and see if that is necessary. The other thing you can do is apply a wire around the trunk with a loop on it. Then put the hook through the loop and pull. This allows you to have a fairly tight fitting wire around the trunk that won't slip. I always put the wire through plastic tube to make sure I don't damage the trunk.

Very nice, I found myself in the same situation...not being able to bend on my own and wire not holding.

In the pulling configuration, the maximum distance between the hooks is 580mm and the minimum is 70mm.

Masakuni make bending bars. No local suppliers that i know of. Postage makes the a bit exxie, but works for people without a steel workhop in their shed. Have a medium sized one, which does 30mm trunks easily.

That's some quality engineering there mate
Picture 's clear as a bell which is very handy.
Not long ago I was trying to explain this to a mate that works as a fitter and turner but lacked a good example.
We did sketch up a design but it was after work which meant a few beers were involved. Hence something that
actually worked!!! was not the outcome.
To my mates credit though he did come up with a super sized branch bender, but we are still tweaking that one
Really like that simple switch over to make it into a stretcher. Well done
