Hi all, I have just picked up a Juniperus x media "Dandelion" from the local nursery for $5 and thought I would give it a try as a bonsai. Does anyone know if they are any good?

The tag says "prune lightly in early spring, only trim foliage, not woody stems" so will have to see how it responds. I left enough to give me a few options later if it survives.

J. x media responds much the same as other junipers. The tag is just warning not to cut down to bare wood. You can trim and prune without fear as long as you leave some green growth. Root prune as for all other junipers.
You can make a bonsai with this variety but I find the foliage a bit too open and coarse to give good foliage pads. Even if this one does not end up as a show stopper you will learn much about training bonsai from it.

Thanks again Shibui, you may need to start charging me for these lessons. I am sure I will get $5 worth of experience from it.
