What is this growing in my pots???

Post by Rob101 »

Hi all

There is something growing in a couple of my pots around the rim in the pic below. Little circular shapers with 4 dots in each circle. ImageI have never seen this growing in my pots before. Does anyone know what it is, is it ok to allow to grow??

Cheers

I have not seen these but my guess is that they are fruiting bodies of some fungi.

I have this s#!t in one of my training pots every year!
It drives me crazy because it grows across the soil surface fast and is impermeable to water.
The root system is deep, so scraping takes about 10mm of the top layer of soil with it, which needs to be replaced.
I scrape it out repeatedly over the warmer months, only for it to grow back - FAST.
Then, at repotting time, I wash and flush the roots to rid the soil of it.
Come spring, another random pot will grow this stuff.
It only occurs if the tree has been left in partial shade - where the soil remains a bit on the damp side.
No idea what it is, but keep picking it out because water won't get through the foot print of this stuff, and it can leave the under-soil dry even after drenching!

Those are birds nest fungi (Nidulariaceae) they're harmless in the garden but I'm not sure about in pots

Probably means your soil mycorrhizae is working well.

Olivia wins the prize!

I noticed them in one of my pots this year too. So far the plant seems fine...

I just checked a couple of sites which say these are not harmful to living plants. They grow in soils with plenty of wood and mulch and break down the woody material in the soil.
I find fungi fascinating :reading:
