swamp cypress & swiss mountain pine

Post by danandem »

hi?,
my girlfriend just bought me a swamp cypress bonsai for christmas, and i have been looking at it and there is a thick root growing out the drain hole in the bottom of the pot. does this indicate that the roots need to be trimmed? if so when would the best time to trim them be? i recieved two bonsai trees for christmas and have no experience at all, although im wanting to learn, get more and look after and keep them alive. the other tree i recieved was a swiss mountain pine i was told its about 15 years old. could anyone give me any help with these trees? and any care tips would be great? the tip of one of the branches on the swiss pine seems to be a bit broken and is going brown, should i remove it?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
kind regards dan.

hey dan how you doin?, and welcome here. the swamp cypress is deciduous so no root work till late winter/ early spring, at bud swell. the swiss im assuming you mean a mugo pine. best thing for obtaining advise is to 1) fill out your profile so we know where you're from and locals from your area may chime in as well. 2) photos are a good thing to post up. these two pointer's so as to asses and advise more accurately. :D

Hi Dan and welcome to AusBonsai. Please post some pictures of the tree's so we can give you more specific advice for your trees.

Here is an article on starting out in bonsai so you can read up and get started.

Did you ask for a bonsai for Christmas or were you just given them?

Regards,
Steven

hi everyone,
thanks for your replys, every time i try to fill in my profile it asks me to log in! in fact every time i post i have to relog in when i press submit! does anyone know why this is happening? maybe i need to make a new account? a quick bit of info untill then. i live up in Mt Isa QLD so it does get really hot here, and gets cold in winter. i asked for my bonsai's for christmas as i find them beautiful and love anything that grows. will the roots growing out of the drain hole in my cypress harm the tree? untill i can get my account sorted out i cant post any pictures.
im looking foward to growing my skills and learning from everyone's advice.
kind regards dan.

Hi Dan, If you realy have concerns with your Swampy you could just do a slip pot to carry you through to Spring. A slip pot is just remove the old pot (cut it off if you have to and place into next size up pot with a little more soil.

Hi Dan,
I'm not sure why this would be happening. Check the FAQ's and if that fails send Gocny a PM and he will get you sorted.
