Hi Grant this tree is coming along a treat. Re the new foliage which is growing in a downwards direction, do you think that this is more to do with age or the growth following your wiring pattern?

EDIT - In regards to the tree though, its looking beautiful Grant.

I'm definitely coming to the next CBS show if this is a taste for what you guys are brewing down there.

It started the downward hanging foliage on its own a couple of years ago (check thread) and I have been reinforcing it since. So age and species related rather than my specific techniques other than ramifying etc I would think.

Don't forget there will be a Native Seminar in late Feb as well. The weekend before Pavel Slovak comes to Canberra. It's go go go down here now and Leigh is doing a wonderfull job as the Curator of the NBPCA as well.

Any update on this tree, Grant?

It’s in a new pot as of a few years ago, needs some trimming and wiring but intend to get on with it soon.

Will update as anything happens.

Here is the tree at start of work this morning. It has gotten a bit out of control the last 4 years and really needs trimming back the top foliage to strengthen the lower branches which are getting a bit weak. It’ll will take a few days of work before its back at its best.

The tree is in a pot I have had for many years but don’t know who made it. Looks and feels Japanese.

The only die back is if the lower branches are completely overpowered by the more dominant upper branches. As long as you keep it balanced by trimming back the top frequently you will have no problems,

Any advice on fertilising with this species, Grant?

I fertilise with Nitrosol every two weeks at recommended high strength. I am about to put some Osmocote in fertiliser cups as well too see how it goes.

I haven’t finished wiring yet, but the lower branches are all wired down and doing fine, the top branches were shortened to redirect vigour to the lower branches, It sits in absolute full sun all year round and does fine here in Canberra.

My tree is at a tricky and messy stage. It has been putting out a lot of growth and I need to control the apex more now, so I am continuing sporadically to wire branches down and cut off upward growth. Lots of work to do yet.

Love this tree Grant. Callitris are one of my favourite species and I wish there were more of them.
