Progress after 8 years

This Blueberry ash was removed from a garden in 2002. The thinning at the top is due to a slow come back after defoliation.

As it is currently inside for the winter it will recieve plenty of attention and I am hoping to have it ready for the club show.

I will post a better pic toward the end of winter.

I think the branching at the top ( above the Last branch on the right ) is a bit too long. Would it be worth while to reduce the length of these by about 1/2 to give a more rounded canopy?

Hey Peter,

I acquired an old one of these today, it is only a stump due to drying out last summer but has some strong regrowth.

Could you tell me more about your care for this tree, soil, fert, water, position etc

New pot. Hoping I get a few more flowers this year but I suspect after the re-pot this will be very unlikely.

How do you get the leaves so small? Do you completely defoliate or cut any leaves that grow too big?

Hi Edward,

I have defoliated in the past,removing the larger leaves and leaving the smaller ones. This year I will be changing the timing of this to when the flowers are out around December. In the past I have done the defoliation inside during the winter months (avoiding frosts). This lead to soft leaves,so when it came time to put it outside, the UV burnt the leaves. This put all the energy into growing more leaves and very few flowers. Well, that is the theory.

Hi Peter, I usually defoliate however the leaves grow back just as big. I'm guessing because I usually repot at the same time. This year, next week in fact I'll do a complete defoliation without the repot and see how the leaves respond. I really want to reduce the leaf size so it doesn't matter if I do not have any flowers this summer (I usually see them every year).

I have always assumed that reduced leave size has more to do with ramifications - same overall surface area but more leaves...
But then I have been shown Mame sized trees where the same is true - small tree size seems to give small leaf size...

I haven't yet heard that selective defoliation causes a reduction in leaf size.
