Iron bark collecting

Post by zimzallabim »

Last year I truck chopped an iron bark on my dads property. It has since shari back magnificently when I last checked back in July. I’d like to collect it soon, what would be the best Time of the year to do this?

In Sydney I collect/dig natives from start of October with good results.
If your down south maybe wait a few weeks.

Depends on how much you want it to survive? If you want to be more certain do some work on it first. I would cut around it with a shovel, cutting heavy roots and then replace some of the dirt with your bonsai mix. Leave it for a few months then if there new roots growing in the mix dig it, Autumn is a good time. After you dig it put the pot in a shallow tray of water for a while so it never dries out.
That's how I do it, other might do it differently.
Cheers,

Warm to hot weather, shallow water bath afterwards. Good luck. You may not have surface roots to keep it going - it depends on the local rainfall.

It’s growing on the side of a clayish bank so I’m hoping for some shallow feeder roots at least
