I've found they dont take particularly well to cutting back hard and are likely to drop the branch, especially if there are plenty of other branches around to transfer energy to. In saying that I try to keep at least a pair of leaves or cut back to the first side branch to keep that branch producing energy and try to force backbudding, this works pretty well for me. Once the new shotos are going strong I can further reduce the branch and improve the ramification, takes a bit more time but thats something we're all used to
