I have had this nicholii for many years and as this tree has progressed it has taught me many things about Eucalypts and in particular this variety. I have been unable to keep the height reduced with the pruning regime I have used over the past 16 years. So, observations of street pruning of Eucalypts has shown that if pruned hard(cut back with no foliage) in the hot months(Dec,Jan) ,they produce new growth at and below the cuts.

With this in mind I have done this to several of my Eucalypts this year with success. Now I hope my theory works on this ,my oldest Euc.

Hopefully the next update will this trees reconstruction.

Just don't fertilise too early after the new growth starts. That's what I did to my E. scoparia and it never recovered

The original was beautiful so hopefully the new soon to be improved version will be just as spectacular .

I generally only seal cuts deciduous trees. So yes Rambo style.

Glad its shooting back. Can't wait to see it with a full crown once again.

Brave cuts Peter but clearly you know what you're doing. Great to see budding down nice and low on those long branches.

When will you apply wire?

Hi Scott,

Not such a brave cut because of the pretesting with some stock Eucalypts this summer. I have seen other Euc Bonsai become large a didn't wont to end up with hard to handle Bonsai in the years down the track.

I have already wired (1 and 2mm) some of the new growth(carefully as the attachment of the new growth to the old wood is weak).It is easier to bend at this stage and important to position at this stage.

Your cuts have focussed attention on the trunk very well, it makes for a stronger tree in my opinion. The change in colour of the bark from one season to the next is also really interesting. Fine tree, thanks for posting.
