Collected Eucalyptus

G'day,

Looking for opinions and reasoning on where to chop this Euc (actually I believe it's an Angophora as it has opposite leaves)

It's 120mm at its base and just over 2 metres tall.





I'm leaning towards growing a fairly tall tree but open to advice.

After looking at photos of Ted's Angophora I have much taper to build, so will chop on the morrow!

Depending on how much root you were able to get is where I would chop it . At this stage I would chop it so the foliage matches the roots . If you got a reasonable amount I would chop it above the second branch if not then above the first branch . Keeping some foliage will help it to survive ,don't expect these branches to make it . The tree if it survives may pop new shoots from the trunk or from those branches . Hopefully you will get shoots in places that you can use but let it establish itself to pot culture first before playing with it . Keep the water up to it Anyway that's what I would do .

I believe I collected 90% of the fibrous roots and chopped two moderately sized roots and the tap root,

I have wondered this lately too, that perhaps with the low success rate of collected Eucalyptus that leaving some foliage on to help re-establish root systems may be of benefit? Assuming that first branch is not 2 or 3 metres tall.

I'm inclined to go with your advice Sno and chop above that second branch, hope it pulls through with the plan to chop down near the bend next summer to develop some taper.

Summer's usually a safe time to collect Eucs. They can get sulky in the cooler months. Good luck.

It would have been great to dig these out earlier however the area has been flattened already making way for the new hospital, wider roads and pathways. It was going to die anyway.

Everyday they progress another couple of hundred metres.

So far so good, this has put out new growth continually since it was dug.



Shoots from every crotch and node imaginable and no signs of giving up just yet.



Bark is flaking up and ready to peel as I write, at first I was worried thinking it was cracking up and drying out.

Looking good , it looks like it has recovered well . I'd wait for the bark to finish peeling then Its time to chop .
