Hi guys me and the missus salvaged this tree from a roof gutter on August this year, a day after her birthday so it has some good memories to it. It caught my eye cause it had a massive oval shaped root on it. So I got it home put it in the only thing I had and its been going pretty well. I had originally buried it all the way to just below the bulge, but recently I have lifted it up so it's now showing the oval part of the root. It took that pretty well so now I'm thinking I should probably chop it down to the 1st branch, I'm not shore what kind of bonsai it's gonna make especially with its leaf size, but I'll be happy with a euc tree in a pot with a story and memory behind it.
So is it ok to chop that much now or should I chop it gradually, normally I wouldn't care but this tree can't be replaced as in I can't go buy another one if it dies. Or if you have any other suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Tony

Re: Eucalyptus saved from roof gutter
Eucs are generally pretty responsive to pruning Tony. They usually shoot new buds, even from bare wood so you'll be safe cutting back to that small branch. Now should be a good time to cut Eucs.

I'd get rid of the weed you have growing around it. Once it seeds you will have it everywhere!

Re: Eucalyptus saved from roof gutter
Tony, far from saying I am doing it right but I would like to suggest that if you want movement in the trunk, that needs to be done now.
This is my first time training a Euc, but the weeping habit seems to fit them naturally so this what I am going for.
This three year old is coming along nicely for a fifty year project. viewtopic.php?f=78&t=21108&p=235628#p235628 . I have just updated it.
Good luck with yours,
regards
Watty
