River Red Gum Fusion....

Post by Josh7 »

Has anyone ever tried to fuse Gums? Well, i am!
Not sure if and how it will fuse, but there's no harm in trying. I put this together in a hurry late last week and have used 10 seedlings without anything in the centre to mould themselves around. I have only used 10 as Gums grow fast and fat. If this looks like working, i will try it 'properly' with a base/template thingy for shape.
Note my dodgy wiring (i claim to be the worst wirer in the world) and the choice of 1st class pot!
It's just a rough experiment, but we'll see what happens.......

hi josh :D

cool idea using natives for it! i know steven has gotten casuarina to fuse, and just recently MattA put a pic up in "drop in on sunday" of some eucs fusing in nature! i have full confidence that not only will they fuse but they will quite quickly too i reckon!

Hey Josh,

I have never tried to fuse eucs but did find a few that had naturally fused on a recent wander in the bush. They were yellow box & spotted gum, 1 smooth barked the other rough barked. It was an interesting look & not one I would attempt to recreate, even tho they are occuring in nature, but from that find I would say that your experiment will work, the results will show in time. I look forward to seeing it.

Maybe you could have flared the base out to create a nice even nebari?

Matt, i saw your post on the natural fusions - great pics. It's very interesting stuff. It's common to see trees 'swallowing' fence posts, star pickets, street signs, but not smooth bark / rough bark compositions...

Waltron, I didn't flare the base out too much because there would have been too much space there in the short term, and i didn't want to leave them too far apart in case they didn't fuse. Can still get good nebari from the roots below soil level though.

Thanks for the input guys. Here's hoping it works!

The idea is great josh! but you need to get more raffia and wire on with out the sloppiness. raffed bottom to top, all surface covered and supported firm. then 2 wraps of as thick a wire it can take. Now you will be able to twist and bend that baby real good. 8-)

ps if ya wanna ever do a serious session come up this way! ;)
