Lucky door prize ficus

Post by melbrackstone »

Nice little win from the Bonsai Society meeting yesterday. For some reason the pot doesn't have drainage holes, the person who donated the tree said there's no need to water it, just leave it out where the rain will do the job! :lost:

Luckily I bought some very nice pots from Marie Hewartson yesterday as well!

I agree Ken! I took my lucky charm daughter to the meeting to watch Carole Waller give an amazing demo on making bonsai rocks. Was a very enjoyable and exciting afternoon.

Recommend Carole to anyone interested in looking for a fabulous demonstrator. :)

 Mel,
Nice pots & great that the prize ficus was dated & labelled. No need to post the age old question "what kind of ficus is this...?"

I've been stocking up on pots from Erin and the European Collective too, but figured I should get some locally as well. I've already used up most of the ones from OS....and still have a lot of repotting to do, so yes, it is nice to have some choices.

So true, KCAR! I now know what an actual Ficus rubiginosa looks like! To be honest I haven't really concerned myself too much with the variety, they all grow well here. I also have some seed grown figs, about the same age as this one, but they're no where near the size or quality, so I'm going to have to talk to the guy who grew the biggun to get some hints. :)

He's marked the pot as grown from seed 2010, but there's a label in the pot that says 16, so I think he may mean 2001...no matter...

Edit: if it's only 7 years old then I definitely need to pick his brains!!!!

I wasn't too happy with the long stretch of straight trunk, so gave it a chop after Winter last year (2017) and now starting to grow it back. The right branch was pretty much all I kept.

Container is by Stone Monkey ceramics 34cm x 23cm

I really like this Mel. Along with removing the top, I think you have made an excellent decision to change the potting angle too. Bl@@dy good door prize! I have a substantive level of envy for your pots selection too. [THUMBS UP SIGN]

Hey Mel,
I like what you've done here. This has progressed really well under your care.
I don't understand why you wired the new apex straight up, after you've chopped an upwards growing apex out.
I'd probably like it much more if he new apex was eventually directed to show movement to the right, in keeping with the flow of you're new planting angle, & that lovely low main branch. Just a consideration?
