Who needs flowers?

We have some of the best flowering trees in the world yet they are under used as Bonsai, however you do not need flowers only to have a good show.

Doing some weeding to day had the camera handy so here are a couple one was on recently but has more flowers the other does not. Here they are 1st in a Melaleuca claret tops the other is a Melaleuca incana.

Hi Pup,

Maleluca's are one of my favourite with my recent post. Stunning the claret tops. I hope mine grows to be half as good as yours stunning.
The comparison btw the two are great.
How old are they?

Both are unknown as they were subject to Garden make overs, The M, incana could be 20, the Claret tops probably about the same. As Bonsai in training about 10 years.

Pup, what time of the year do you do any root work on them?


Can I cut back, and do root work at the same time. Or just one or the other?

I am in NSW, so I will adjust my tempature's/weather accordingly.

Totally agree and have 2 claret tops myself and the new foliage is quite special

I also have another Mel that I collected (Melaleuca bracteata i believe) , that has had purple foliage all thru winter. Now that it has shooted in spring, the new foliage is bright green / yellow and looks particularly nice against the old foliage

@irish , I think you can do work on them at anytime of the year except winter while they are not active. Be interesting to see what Pup says as i am waiting for warmer weather so i can work on this one of mine

G,day Irish, I do my root work and pruning if needed at the same time. As for when! whenever they are in active growth, I am doing them now, I water them then 2 hours later start to root prune. I have found this works well for me Here in WA. Most of our natives can have up to 8 growth spurts a year so if you miss one just wait a few weeks.

Fine trees Pup! The foliage of many of our native trees is subtly stunning. More impressive in my opinion than disproportionally large flowers.
