This is a Melaleuca but I don't know which one (maybe some one could ID it for me?) and it was growing in a garden and had to go, and so using a number of theory's out it came today. The theory's I used were:
1) Shibui recently gave a Mel a root prune and hard trim so the timing must be right?
2) It had been flowering and has really just finished that process, so the timing must be right?
3) It is better to root prune Australian natives in the warmer weather so the timing must be right?
4) It was growing in a garden so the growing conditions were not too bad, so the timing must be right?
As yo can see I was trying to convince myself (and I did) and what else would you do on a Saturday, so the photos are following.
PS - if someone could identify the variety that would be much appreciated.
I used a few other theory's too, I removed all the straight trunks, I potted it into the smallest pot possible for the root ball and I put it straight into a bonsai pot. And now I cross my fingers and hope.

Re: Melaleuca Dig
Hi Watto
That theorising technique of yours is a beauty.
Reasoning like that would definitely sway me towards getting of the couch and saving another tree.
Mind you the debating that goes on in my head on a hot Saturday arvo can be endless.
Particularly if there's a good show on the box and a cold beverage in front of me.
Yet somehow the lure of a potential bonsai from an otherwise doomed tree is irresistible to me also.
I'm fairly sure like myself you don't need the "pick n shovel" exercise or another tree.
So good on you for saving one more

Plus the stump looks like it might be a cracker

Saved the tree Bob and at no cost to the owner. Loved the word theorising you used.

Re: Melaleuca Dig
Hi Watto, I asked a friend from the CBS to have a look at this tree and she thinks it is a Melaleuca linariifolia.(Yes, two i)
You could also check with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melaleuca_linariifolia
As for the potting and trimming: she thinks it might work if you haven't removed too much of the rootball, and give it good aftercare.
Good luck,
Lisa

Re: Melaleuca Dig
Wow, thank you Lisa, I think you are on the money, much appreciated.
I am confident (glass half full type of person) that it will be fine so I will update as time goes by.
