Banksia spinulosa ??

Post by WoodWizard »

Just moved into a new rental a few weeks ago and saw some foliage popping up from the soil I dug down and found this hefty tree stump, I think it's a banksia spinulosa ( no idea on the exact variety ) Whipped out my angle grinder and carved back a heap of horrible dead wood and I'll see what happens I guess !!

Hah, good to see you have a crack! Best looking leaves I've seen on a Banksia (NB: not a fan of Banksia).

Holy CRAP! You said what??? I think I had a similar thing to say not so long ago (can't remember the precise thread, but I'm pretty sure "treeman" was involved). In any case, there was a pretty strong defence for the humble banksia - so - what does one do??? Go get some banksia! Yep... That's what I did and I reckon it's been 2 months and so far so good. They were just tube stock (mainly because I still wasn't convinced) and with no special treatment they have visibly advanced. I trunk chopped one to nothing and its bounced back. Mine are Integrifolia so can't comment on the species in this thread, but if they all behave like this, I have no doubt you can get yourself a great banksia bonsai quicker than most species. Good luck Woodwizard!

Integs are bullet proof!! We would pot hundreds every year at the tree nursery I worked for and we would rarely lose any at all, we would even cut them down and chuck the stump and rootball down the back of the nursery with roots totally exposed and months later they would be growing !!!
