Interesting coastal cutting

Post by ebminor9 »

Hi bonsai lovers.

I took a 3 cutting from this tree by the ocean. It has been growing in a pot for a few years now. Time to re pot and maybe do some initial pruning maybe some wiring. The cutting was tiny when I took it and it has been growing for a few years now.

Any help or opinions of any kind would be a god send.

Thanks bonsai lovers!

UPDATE.

Didn’t do any pruning but a very light root prune also a report. Looks pretty cool in the pot. Still unsure about pruning and wiring. The original tree had lots of very cool twists.

Once again any opinions will be very welcome.

Thanks bonsai lovers.

Hi ebminor9, looks like a Coprosma to me although I can't remember the species. They are pretty tough and will take lots of pruning, repotting and won't dry out easily. I would say just keep growing it to increase the thickness of the trunk at this point. The leaves will also reduce in size quite a bit with pruning.

The pictures are only thumbnails but I agree with Coprosma as an ID.
I would leave it to settle into the pot for a month or so but if you want a trunk with bends and twists like the original tree I would wire and put bends in after that recovery time. When the trunk thickens a but more it may get really stiff and difficult to bend.

Coprosma are good material to work with. Very forgiving, and as mentioned the leaves reduce well. You're absolutely right to get bending now as they become brittle as they thicken. I have been trying to lower a branch on this one using a turnbuckle, but it's slow going.
