Collecting natives. What to do and what not to do?

Discussions about propagating from cuttings, seeds, air layers etc. Going on a dig (Yamadori) or thinking of importing? Discuss how, when and where here.

Collecting natives. What to do and what not to do?

Post by Asus101 »

I have a chance to visit a private property in Adelaide hills and collect both gums and she oaks (she-oaks live in water most of the year).
I want to just at this chance, but I have questions, or rather one main question and lots of little ones.

How does one collect a native and keep it alive?
When to dig?
Do you strip it of foliage?
Do you soak it for a few days before hand?
Do you bare root them?

What to do?
Young and hostile but not stupid.

Get as much of the root system as possible, remember you have to carry it. Cut back some of the foliage remember the sap has to have a reason to pump to that area. See how much I cut back when I re potted the group. Keep them away from strong winds Sun and put them in soil.
I have not collected Gums so I cannot give advice.

i have collected gums before, only little ones, and only ones with lignotubers.

i have cut all the tops off, and all the roots leaving only the potatoe-like lignotuber, 100% success.

also i have done the same but left about 300mm up top, and 100mm underneath, 100% success.

all in the height of summer, and about to extend the new growth buds.

i think they were nicolli.
