I have a Taiwan maple (?) That I got off ebay. I've had it for just over a year from a seedling and it's already over 6 foot... The problem being it hasn't branched at all yet, still got foliage all the way up the trunk though. Would I be able to set multiplel ayers on the trunk with just the leaves but no branches?
Cheers Grant
Hi Grant,
As long as the areas between the layers have a reasonable amount of growth I think it would be okay. Would it be possible for you to post a photo? That would give us a clearer picture of the growth on the tree.

This is the only pic I've got on me but like I said it's just a straight stick with leaves on it...

or just thinking maybe it's not worth layering, would I get away with chopping right down and trying to strick cuttings?

Hi Grant,
This is a very young tree mate. Why don't you just let it grow and thicken up the trunk. At the moment it is the same diameter all the way up. If you let it thicken up and then cut down fairly low and repeat this process you will be able to create some nice taper. You will have to do this several times to gain the girth and taper you would like in the tree. This will take some time. Just a suggestion.

Thanks Ray...
After seeing the pic while posting i kind of figured it wasn't worth it, doubted whether I could even cut the layer properly.

Hi Grant,
Don't be discouraged mate. Use the tree to learn how to develop a nice thick trunk and taper. From the photo I can't see what sort of pot/grow box it is in. Make sure the pot/grow box is a good size so the tree can develop. I don't know if you have every tried planting in colanders. If the tree was in a colander and ground planted that could help develop the trunk more quickly. If this interest you have a look at viewtopic.php?f=9&t=14986&hilit=+ground

Hi everyone,
I removed a couple of layers off this maple yesterday. I had put another 12 layers on the tree last year. All the trees in the ground have had a hard time up at Ray Nesci's over many months because of the lack of rain. Fortunately he has received some good rain recently. I had a look at the layers yesterday and decided to remove a couple. The rest of the layers will stay on until there are sufficient roots showing.

I was stoked to be given one of these daughter Shisha gashira last night by Ray Nesci.

It will be a long slow process but I hope to see it grow into a credible tree one day (maybe even 2 tree's ).

Hi Steven,
Wow mate, you are a lucky boy. :tu: There's not to many of these around. Is it one of the layers I did for Ray? Look forward to it's progress.
