Re: Invitation to a DIG
Hi Guys,
A big thanks to Watto and the Goulburn bonsai crew. Haven't had a chance to get on the site since the dig.
Great to see some of the usual suspects at the dig and meet some new ones too!
A great day and some great trees pulled as well. Well worth the drive.
Both of mine have started to bud swell but I figure that it is energy in the trunk that is responding to the hard pruning and root disturbance.
Will post some picy's when I get a chance.
Andrew

Re: Invitation to a DIG
I have quite a few Pushing new growth already but likewise probably just stored energy, Give them 6 weeks and they should be good.

Re: Invitation to a DIG
This one is budding like crazy .
Some of the early growth looked a bit brown and unhealthy but now it looks very green and healthy.

Re: Invitation to a DIG
Hi guys.
I hope all your hawthorns are recovering well. Out of the 2 big ones I collected one is thriving and the other struggling.
Out of all my trees This is my favourite tree by far you just can't beat collected trees.
Who thinks I should airlayer this tree? I like the base but it sort of bugs me at the same time

Re: Invitation to a DIG
I'd be tempted to air layer it just above the second major branch to give good taper to the trunk and compact the tree a bit. The top should make useful material to go on with as a second / free tree (if you don't count the time / work involved). Just my

Re: Invitation to a DIG
Good luck with layering the Hawthorn. They dont do it well in my experience.

Re: Invitation to a DIG
The thought had crossed my mind jan. now looking at it in the photos it's clear that it will look better with the top reduced to the second large branch from the top.
Really bodhidharma I would never have picked a hawthorn to be hard to layer.

Re: Invitation to a DIG
I think the nabari is OK, looks like a wild tree. Bodhi is correct, they are sometimes cantankerous when trying to layer.

Re: Invitation to a DIG
I woud just cut back rather than try to layer.
Plenty more to collect when Watto has another dig
Of nine I think 4 have shot out well and 3 other still yet to show
Hope they do shoot this week. That way Bougy can take one or 2 home with him to try
