A new Callistemon

This was collected this morning . The original base was 600mm + in diameter so it was going to be a real challenge to dig it out i 1 piece .

I did my best but the tap roots were too big so it was split up into 4 pieces .

The 3 larger pieces have good roots and shoots , the smaller piece has buds but no root to speak of .

These will soak in seasol power feed today and be planted into the trident grow beds tomorrow , covered to keep the sun off the new foliage

. They were watered with power feed 3 days ago and watered by the home owner twice a day for the 3 days .I did collect a few other trunks including what looks like a red foliage plum , i wont know for sure until the leaves form from the new shoots .

I'm fairly confident they will survive considering the were sprayed with round up when felled 3-4 months ago and have re shoot new shoots/growth .

There is a couple of cotonesters with 600mm bases that need removing , they too will be split for ease of removal and treated in the same fashion .I think the 4x4 will be required just to persuade them to come out .

Nice pick up mate. They are tough trees that for sure. Keep us posted how they fair. I've got my Juni covered at the moment to, to try and stop dehydration.

Hi Guys , it would have been nicer if i could have cut the tree's down myself but the have been saves this far. With temps heading for the mid 40's i may just put these in big pots so they can be moved into semi shade .

Would have to agree with you, especially with what the news/weather has been saying about the coming weekend. Heat waves all round the country it seems!

Hi Jan , no idea what cultivar it is , i will scout the street for other trees with the same features and do some research . It's an older area of Myrtleford so there is bond to be more tree's of this species around .

Hi Jason , mate its going to be hot alright , it was 38 degrees yesterday and heading higher today . Better get out there and do some work .

Well i went back and dug a cotonester before the heat of the day hit hard .I potted these up and sat them into the scoria wet beds

, They can stay here in the cooler area of the yard and hopefully pull through .

Lots of potential with these Callistemons, Alpine, I presume they will be future carving candidates; any images of the Cotoneasters?

Hi Jan , yes i like the carving capacity on these trunks if they survive .I did knock the shoots of the center trunk so again it may not survive . The last trunk is almost a non candidate with no roots or shoots now .

Only the 1 stump has survived all the stresses i could dish out , mainly neglect . This was re-potted yesterday and had the trunks plaited and roughly wired .

Iadded a piece of alluminium flashing around the trunk and filled with bonsai mix to keep the trunk cool and moist for the the onset of warmer weather . This will do for now more pressing jobs to be done .

Hi Elmar I use plastic pots to build up extensions when trunks don't fit the containers, this flashing was used to build up the root over rock wisteria recently potted .I couldn't lift the big plastic pot however I can manage this trunk now .

Hi Watty' mate there is only a 150mm wide live vein on the underside of the trunk now . This has produced very good roots , the dead wood is decaying quite fast so in order to carve it it need some treatment to stop the rot . I have a plan but it's still 12 months off , originally it was to sit the opposite direction with the deadwood on the underside .
