Root cuttings

Post by Terry »

Has anyone had an experience in propagating figs from root cuttings. I have just repotted a large benjamin fig (house plant) and was left with some big lumps of root. Thought I might share the process I have used with you and see if it is a success. What do you think? Will the grow? Please feel free to comment.

They are figs, they will grow :D

Have you seen some of the other examples of root cuttings here on Ausbonsai?

Thanks for sharing your work with us and for taking all those pictures!

On the knowledgeofbonsai site there is an article that shows the development of a willow leaf ficus root cutting. You can view it here

The root cuttings you have look pretty healthy so i'm sure they'll grow

Not all Ficus will propagate from root cuttings. I am not sure about benjamina. Microcarpa will not propagate for me from roots.
Salicifolia, salicaria will propagate easily. Burtt-davyi, natalensis among others will.
Good luck with your efforts and keep us posted.

My experience with Port Jackson figs...........take as many cuttings as you like after the night-time temps have settled above 16degC, generally around mid October (Sydney), them plant at least 6 cuttings to a pot and you will get about 90% success rate. Dip the base of the cutting in rooting hormone or honey and away you go. All my figs have been propagated this way including my oldest tree circa 1975.
