raewynk wrote:So envious guys, I just don't have the brawn to do what you all have. Digging and chopping them out. But I still learn with the posts you put up. Will learn more in the following posts in the coming months to learn if these trees actually recover and ramificate after the huge shock they have been put through with the dig up.
One hell of a tree.

When you dig up Josh at what point do you soak in seasol?. Season I take it to be winter?

I will have to be happy with the purchases I make.

Rae  :hooray:
Hi raewynk. My digging routine goes like this. As soon as I dig the tree I spray the roots, trunk and leaves with seasol (I'm surprised more people don't do this). I have 2 baths set up in my back yard so when I get home the tree goes straight into a seasol bath for a day or 2. I then pot them up and water in with seasol. I then water with seasol every couple of days for a couple of weeks. I have a special tool for digging which makes life very easy, especially on the bigger stuff. I'll take a photo later and post.
By the way, brains will beat brawn any day so think it through and have a go.

Josh.

My grey hair is my solar panel, as with the leaf on the bonsai is theirs.

Well,so far it looks good. It is chucking out buds/leaves on all trunk like crazy. This is going to be a long term project but will be a great tree I think. It has a great base. It has a lot of dead wood in it but plenty of live wood on each trunk so lots of carving which I will try to use to help get taper into the trunks. For now though I have to be patient  which is hard for me :palm: and let it recover fully before ripping into it.

Bet that made you happy Josh, coming home and seeing it powering. A certain satisfaction that only Bonsai people understand comes with seeing that :tu:

Craig, it actually came out easier than I thought it would so definitely worth the effort. It is going to take a while to turn I to something but its a good start.

Yeah very happy Bodhi. The good thing with being away is you really notice the difference in the trees when you come back. My wife wasn't as excited as I was about it powering on so yes, I know what you mean.

I got mine few years back.
It is 110cm high, trunk at base arround 25cm, above 11cm. I think the proportion is Ok so I did not try to low it down. when I got it home, I recut and seal all root and branches, wait till all dried then pot it, put in the shade.

This tree is powering on and still pushing out buds down the trunk  Just wondering would it be to early to start carving out the dead wood. As you can see there is quite a bit of dead wood that I want to hollow out. This will help with taper on the thicker trunks but I want to treat it also to stop it rotting any more. Thinking I will treat it with earls wood hardener rather than lime sulfur as I don't think the white look of lime sulfur will work with a maple. So carve now or be more patient

I can't see any reason not to carve now. The wood you are going to carve is dead anyway and even taking the shari a bit further should not affect the tree any more now than later. Just ned to take some care not to move the roots too much in case there are still very young, brittle roots still.

Thanks Neil. That's what I was thinking as far as its already dead. Guess tomorrow is carving day. :tu: It is tied into the grow box pretty well so shouldn't move.

I gave it a hair cut, feel free to suggest for further trimming
Hi Tonkin,
Maybe start a thread of your own for your tree, that way you can track it's progress there. Mods, not sure if you can move this to a new thread :?: :?: :?:

Cheers
Josh.
