Collected Wisteria

Today i had to go and dig out 2 old wisteria ( Huge!! ), from my sisters house before she vacates it in a few weeks
They were planted 15 years ago to cover a pergola and had grown very well since then but were sending suckers everywhere and the neighbours were not happy. The pergola was falling over too, so a good opportunity

the plan from here is to pot up tomorrow as it was dark when i got home, then let them recover in winter sun and sheletered spot. They are wrapped in damp ( Seasol) towels for the night as do not have anything big enough to hold them. Hopefully they recover going into spring

The larger one i will cut back further as it is far too heavy, but will put some larger cuttings in to see if they grow. Will have to put them under plastic this time of year.

Nice dig there Ken and yes mine was easier as they were already dug for me That's going to be interesting the one wrapped around the pole. They look like they have some age to them.

I think I can guess why the pergola was falling down . . .

Looks more like a python, but I'm sure it will turn into something interesting. Look forward to seeing updates on these.

How long did it take for you to digg them out?

what sort of after care is involved?

Just finished potting them up now and thanks for the comments

unfortunately I had to remote the top section of the one on the pole ( must be a pole dancer joke there somewhere ). it was far too top heavy and unstable to keep but should be fine anyway

Aftercare will be full sun now as still cold, but sheltered from wind. Seasol 3 times a week, but no other watering to keep them a just damp rather than wet.
I will paint all cut surfaces to prevent drying out as well.

The small one took about an hour to dig as access was better, and the big one was about 2-1/2 hours. I could cut most of the roots of the smaller one with my Demolition saw,but the other one could not due to limited access. it was the reciprocating saw a Kango hammer and hand scraping the soil out

thanks and definitely will be updating every so often. The only issue is that me and my wife cannot lift it together
It will have to stay where it is now that we have got in a spot in the garden on blocks. Dunno how i am going to rotate it!

Haha, I was looking at that, and wondering that exact thought. I think my heaviest bonsai must weigh about 15 or 20kg, so all good for this 37 yr old. Hopefully by the time my back starts to age, my children will be able to move them for me.

Are you going to change the front later on when it recovers as i think the side looks a lot better. (big one edge on pic)
