Callistemon "Dig" Today
Hi all
The other Day, Isitangus posted this link viewtopic.php?f=44&t=16403&start=15#p189205
to a gumtree ad about Callistemons for free.
Thanks for finding this one buddy
I checked it out and today was the "Dig" of 4 different varieties that had been grow3n in pots by a Nursery / Landscaper and they were no longer required and had to be removed. The property they were on will be sold off and redeveloped in due course.
The trees were in 12" and 8" pots and the roots had escaped into the soil, so had to be dug / cutoff and then cared for appropriately.
Ian ( the owner, Was quite excited to see many oof them will be used for Bonsai, rather than just chucked in the ground and for us, they were gold as they had all been chopped at various times.
Hopefully they will all survive as they will be treated kindly.
They will go into Seasol today and soaked until potting up this arvo and tomorrow and much of the new growth removed to limit water loss.
I will remove as little root as possible, and put them into Semishade
Ken

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: Callistemon "Dig" Today
Hi kc , now thats a good score , don't you just love Ebay and Gumtree. I find plenty of material on these sites .The dig must have been on the easy side with the pots still attached
Cheers . Alpine
Actually the smaller ones were the worst as the pot were falling apart and the roots into the ground were quite large
but you are correct, Much easier than raw ground

Re: Callistemon "Dig" Today
Well i am posting pics from my haul tomorrow. All up i bagged 40 trees. It will be hard selecting the best 5 so i will be asking for your help. I thought it was a great experience. My non bonsai believer partner was made to believe these were for hedges ONLY till he heard other ausbonsai fellows speaking of bonsai and then it clicked. LOL . But i was proud of him. An absolute beast at ripping those plants out of the ground.

Re: Callistemon
Nah mate just a trailer and ute. Only got the trailer full. I came prepared to even have the ute filled before i leave but i think i got my fill. The trees were big and healthy but the pots were small so i managed to squeeze a lot in.Isitangus wrote:Bonborn 40 trees!!! Did you bring a truck!

Re: Callistemon "Dig" Today
Well here we go. Each and every single one of this plant is a beauty all with it's own potential. My skills however are limited therefore i will only stick with the ones i am confident in working with. The rest are destined for hedges. Total of 36 trees. Wonder what happened to the other 4!
and here's a few closeups
enjoy. All virtuals welcome

Oh my gosh. I can only imagine the entanglement of the roots. Wow, you guys are in for a lot of work. Hope you have fun. Lots of potential there.
