Hi,

Does anyone have any tips or advice on growing larger fig cuttings?

Hi Deemon,
While this is not my personal advice, I asked a similar question not too long ago and got a reply from Grant saying he had had success in getting a 150mm fig cutting to root in sand, if given the right conditions. Just keep it warm and moist I guess! Hope that was of some help to you, maybe someone who has got their figs going on will be able to elaborate on that.

piece of pie where your from. soak in water for 3-4 days and then into a pot with a good mix. shade but warmth for a month and bobs ya uncle.

I was told by a friend the other day to put them in a mix of 75 to 25 propogation sand and a good organic mix. The superthrive them and fertilize. He warned me not to over water though.

I haven't tried it yet though.

Oh and he said to get them somewhere warm with high humidity.

I'm going to try soon when it gets a bit warmer at nights here in Sydney

My only other query is this..
The piece that will become the cutting has quiet a bit of foliage,
Should I remove any or just let it be, I know the hormone travelling down the cutting will form the roots,
so would it ring true that the more foliage the stronger the roots or should it be reasonably reduced due
to lack the of moisture travelling upwards to the leaves?

i personally defoliate and just leave 2 end leaves and end bud. not too much watering bud dont let dry out either. up against an east facing brick wall works ideal. morning sun radiates heat from the wall all day. sydney is humid enough no prob. otherwise set up water trays full of fine gravel to elevate the pot off the water content/level. hope im makin sense.

oh by the way your biggest enemy is wind!

I took some very large Port jackson cuttings. I just stuck them in some sand and watered well. The bad part with large cuttings is they dont like to thicken and grow taper. Thinner cuttings seem to be better.

I will though use those larger ones and nail on the thinner ones, grafting them togeather.

Thing is, the one I plan to take already has taper. This requires a photo.

Will sort that out when I get home this arvo.

Wait then till its a bit warmer at night and go. You might be better with an airlayer though if its possible.

Deemon, While you out and about get your self a deep polystyrene box. I find for cuttings they are the best thing to keep the warmth, required for a good strike rate. Also some perspex or cling wrap ( which is easier to acquire ) this then is placed over the top to create the humid atmosphere needed for cuttings. I do speak from experience. Take of all foliage except the top. In air laying you leave the foliage.
Asus is right if you can wait it would be the way to go.
