Ausbonsai market apple layer

I bought this apple at the first Ausbonsai market , I have had it in the ground since . It hasn't flowered hence no fruit so I don't know if it is a crab or an apple tree . Either way the abrupt angle half way up from a straight trunk to a trunk with lots of movement jarred me . So today being such a beautiful day in the mountains I started its new direction

Well no apples this year . The layer was removed some time in autumn and has survived the winter .

Pretty happy with the result . It's popping buds in all the right places and later in the season I will make some decisions.
One of them is whether to keep the first branch . It's not very photogenic but I would love to see some fruit or flower hanging off this random branch .

I put it into a G pot , it needs to sit higher in the pot and next year I will either raise higher or place it into a pond pot depending on what happens this year .

The mother stock was chopped hard and the roots given a ' shibui ' so at the moment it is just a large cutting and hopefully will develop over the years .

Well I like it.
The 'random' is a keeper if only for a juicy apple hanging off it next year.
Steve.

Please keep the lower branch.
Sometimes a bit of "randomness" is just what the doctor ordered, otherwise all the tree will look the same.
I have a few apples and to make them flower you need small stub shoots, and plenty of fertilizer, specifically fertilizer designed to make things flower (the same for hawthorn's actually), plus a couple of years in the pot. Apples are hungry little things in regard to both water and fertilizer, so feed them up and water often.

Hello Sno,

I'm a lower branch keeper and completely agree with the above comments.
Looking forward to future updates.
Love the pot too.
Also wondering if that beautiful moss survives the snow you recently photographed for everyone.

Kevin

Now that would be nice .

Thanks for the tips Watto . With the flowering fertilizer do you use it all through the growing cycle or just towards autumn ?
I think your right about a few years in the pot .when I was root pruning the mother stock it looks like it was grown from seed and not a cutting . I really should have asked the person at the Ausmarket any history on the tree .

Hi Kevin . I hope your winter was kind to you . The pot was the first pot I got off Regwac . I think it is one of his wood fired pots , I have been trying to put something into it for a while . It's got some amazing colors in it that the camera doesn't capture .
The moss loves snow . I am going to start putting it around more of my trees to stop ' frost heave '. I've got a problem on those really cold nights the next morning the top layer of my substrate freezes itself out of the pot and I end up with it all over the place . I have found the moss to be a great insulator . This variety of moss naturally grows on rock or concrete and behaves itself for a while when put on the surface of pots . I have nearly an endless supply ,I found the mother load growing at the back of a building in town .

Thanks Hal . The previous owner did most of the work I just chopped off the best bits and put it in a pot. ;)

I start my flowering specific fertilizer right after Christmas and go through until there are no leaves (or June for non-deciduous). The last two years I have used - Debco, ProVita "Flower & Blossom" because I bought too much and will be using it again this coming season. The results appear to be better than previous years, but that might not be all the fertilizer though.

Hi Beano . Not much to update . The tree seemed to establish itself over summer and is quite dormant now . About another 6 weeks or so untill it starts its spring growth . I'll post a picture of the root growth or lack of when I repot it .
Cheers Craig .
